Mission Statement

The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is an educational institution whose mission is to engage a diverse population with the art of our region and our time.

The Museum exhibits, interprets, preserves, collects, and promotes works of proven cultural value as well as new works by emerging artists and craftspeople.

In order to fulfill its mission the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is committed to a range of activities:

Exhibitions: Exhibitions are drawn from the diverse spectrum of art and craft produced in our local and regional area. The Museum will mount its own exhibitions, as well as share and exchange work with other museums, organizations, schools, and programs.

Interpretation:  The Museum’s exhibitions will be documented to enhance visitors’ understanding of the nuances and complexities found in contemporary pieces. Trained and knowledgeable docents will be available in the galleries and for visitor tours.

Permanent Collection: The Museum’s permanent collection will preserve examples of the varied interests, disciplines, mediums, and styles of artists and craftspeople in the local and regional area. Specific pieces in the collection will be available for observation and study.

Acquisitions: Through its Acquisition Committee the Museum will seek out and identify significant examples of art and craft in the area, actively acknowledging the creativity that flourishes on the island and in the region.

Special Presentations: A specific area will present one discipline of craft or medium to encourage the study and understanding of the art process.
